40 HOUR BASIC EVIDENCE TECHNICIAN COURSE

This program is designed for recently-assigned evidence technicians and will introduce them to various evidence collection, identification, and preservation techniques.  The impact of these techniques upon specific criminal investigations will also be discussed.

Course topics will include:
  1. Crime Scene Management
  2. Crime Scene Photography
  3. Crime Scene sketching, diagramming, and animation
  4. Forensic Laboratory Sections
  5. Evidence recognition, handling, packaging, and submission
  6. Trace, tool mark, and firearm evidence
  7. Footwear/tire track castings
  8. Latent prints and impression evidence
  9. Biological evidence and D.N.A.
  10. Search warrants and consent to search
  11. Gunshot residue tests and results
  12. Advances in evidence technology
NOTE: Each officer should be familiar with his/her department's digital camera and should bring the following items to class:
  • Camera & tripod to fit it
  • Latent print development kit which includes black powder/magnetic powder, tape, and backing cards
  • Sufficient packaging and personal protection supplies to process a crime scene

ALL OFFICERS MUST SHOW PROPER DEPARTMENT IDENTIFICATION TO BE ADMITTED TO THE TRAINING AREA

MTU 5’s request for certification of this course, as well as Mandate Approval, has been approved by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standard’s Board.

Course enrollment must be made by the agency CEO or designated training officer.  Registration may be made using our on-line course registration link on this website.  All officers enrolled by their department will be assumed to be on duty unless otherwise noted
